Report by Laura K and Stephanie McC
As part of our Caritas Award, we are organising a charity event. We are hoping to raise as much money as we can for Aid to the Church in Need. Father Paul, a previous chaplain to our school, is an ambassador of this charity.
This charity is at work in more than 130 countries, helping Christians who are prosecuted, oppressed, or in pastoral need. This supports more than 5000 projects every year by building much needed chapels and helping to bring Christ to the faithful around the world.
By the middle of 2013, violence in Syria claimed more than 100,000 lives. Religious persecution has played a crucial role in the conflict in Syria which the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees called
the worst humanitarian crisis since the end of the Cold War.
We plan to use the fitness suite in school to either cycle, walk, run or row the perimeter of Syria, which is 1519 miles, and we are asking for sponsors for our ‘Journey around Syria’.
The journey will take place during our free periods from Friday 28th February – Tuesday 4th March.
In Syria, Christians suffer considerably, as did so many faith communities. Syrians are martyred for refusing to abandon their faith.
We pray for peace in Syria. We pray that weapons will be silenced. We pray for an end to all violence and all armed conflict. We pray with the Holy Father, all of us united:
Mary, Queen of Peace, pray for Syria, pray for us.
