S3 and S4 pupils in the Hospitality classes were visited by Archie Strang, an Environmental Health Officer with North Lanarkshire Council on Friday afternoon.
Mr Strang gave a presentation explaining the dangers of food poisoning and the risks to the public when eating in restaurants or from takeaway outlets.
Pupils enjoyed answering Mr Strang’s questions about personal hygiene, food poisoning, food preparation and storage. They were particularly fascinated by photos and anecdotes of local – unnamed! – incidents, noting in some cases that they were “pure minging”.
This visit was especially useful for the “Hygiene for the Hospitality Industry” element of the Intermediate I course, and it is hoped to be repeated in the future.
