Champions League 2017

Report from Mrs McNeish

OLHS annual Champions league competition took place at Firpark Astro on Friday 19th May. 8 teams, comprising of pupils from S1-S3 plus a staff member contested the trophy.

As usual, the standard of play was fantastic and all games were played in good spirit. Before the final, our staff took on a group of S3 boys for a game, a brilliant watch with the pupils winning 1 nil.

The overall winners, Juventus, were presented with the trophy by Mrs Sinclair. The squad consisted of Gabriel Markula, Jay Fulton, Ryan Bourke, Liam McQuaid, Patrick Pender, Robbie Payne, Ryan Murphy, Liam Duffy, Josh Barr, Liam Cogan and Mr Macmaster. Well done to all involved, a great day!

OLHS Sports Day

OLHS Sports Day is on Thursday 25th May [edit: this has now been changed to Wednesday 24th may].

Pupils will compete in their house groups in the following events: 100m sprint, 400m, 800m, Long Jump, High Jump, Javelin, Shot Put, Relay and Tug of War.  PE Department staff will be coming round RE classes to sign pupils up for the various events.  We are looking for two boys and two girls from each house group to compete in each of the individual events and the relay and ten pupils from each house group to compete in the tug of war.

All pupils will be involved in sports day in some way.  Last year was a great success so we are looking for the same enthusiasm from everyone.

NLC Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships

Report from Miss Moir

Five pupils travelled to Airdrie Leisure Centre on Thursday to participate in the North Lanarkshire Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships. All pupils performed well and managed to battle through some tough weather conditions.

In the S1 girls race Cavan Ryan finished strongly to take fourth place overall. Abigail Freel finished in 18th and Lauren Mullen Pentney crossed the line in 81st place.

Anton Scott did a great job representing the school in the S1 boys race, finishing in 52nd place overall.

In the S3 girls race Rachel Donnelly ran a fantastic race and came home in first place!

Congratulations to all pupils on a great performance!

Champions League Trip: Manchester City vs Celtic

48 pupils and 4 members of staff travelled to Manchester on Tuesday 6th December to watch the Celtic v Manchester City Champions League fixture at the Etihad Stadium.  We arrived an hour before kick- off; pupils and staff soaked up the atmosphere by listening to bands that were playing and buying souvenirs in the superstore. We were seated in the Colin Bell stand, brilliant seats which gave a full view of the Etihad. The game, which finished 1-1, was evenly matched with both teams having chances.

After having breakfast on Wednesday morning we filed onto the bus which took us to Old Trafford, home of Manchester United FC.  We were given a chance to wander round the museum where we learned about the history of the club and then we were given a guided tour of the stadium, including the Alex Ferguson stand, the press room, changing rooms, players’ tunnel and the dugout.  Both pupils and staff thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and the pupils, as always, were a credit to Our Lady’s High School.

Real Madrid

The proposed Porto Trip is moving to Madrid, which is a good bit cheaper and will allow pupils access to Real Madrid’s training Ground and the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

A £50 deposit to secure your place is due to Mrs McNeish by Friday 25th November. Payment cards will be issued then too. Payments will be taken at interval in the Nurture room. Thank you.

Girls’ Football Tournament

Congratulations to the girls football team in yesterday’s tournament at St. Ambrose. The girls played very well to beat Duncanrig with a very convincing score of 3-1 and had a hard fought 1-1 draw against Wallace High School. Unfortunately despite great efforts the girls lost to St. Mungos and Uddingston.

Special mention goes to top goal scorer Alicia Jackson who scored 5 goals and Fatemah Asmara who scored 1.

Well done girls!

Team: Fatemah Assar, Alicia Jackson, Ebony Bollard, Collette O’Neil, Keela- Chae McCreaddie, Jade Simpson, Skye Rodgers Chloe-Ann Black, Carys Flanagan, Elle Paton, Alicia Kane, Kelsey Clinton, Jodie Ferguson, Appendeki Wilondja

S2 netball

The S2 netball team had their second home game of the season against Bellshill Academy last night.  It was a very closely fought game and unfortunately Bellshill came out on top with the score ending 5-8.  Despite this narrow defeat the girls demonstrated a big improvement from their last game and played some impressive netball.  Goals came from Caris Hunter and Olivia Latimer.  Bellshill Academy chose Heather McMahon as their player of the match and Olivia McKay was chosen as most improved player.  Well done girls Miss Simpson is delighted!

Netball results

Report from Miss Simpson

Well done to the S1 and S2/3 netball teams who played their first home match of the season last night against Brannock HS.

The S1 team were 3-0 down after the first quarter however they demonstrated great resilience and team spirit to win the match 6-4 with Clare McVey scoring all six goals.  The S2/3 team played a very closely fought match and managed to sneak a draw in the latter stages of the last quarter to make the score 9-9.  Goals coming from Caris Hunter and Michaela Miller.

Special thanks go to Michaela Bennett, Robyn Leach, Amy Dunne, Amy Alexander and Holly McGuire for helping with the organisation, timing and scoring and Caitlin Kearney for coaching both of the teams.

Well done, girls, you did Our Lady’s proud!

Young Ambassadors for Sport

Lucy McQuaid and Luke Dickson represented the school at the Young Ambassadors for Sport Conference which took place on September 14th at Hampden Park.

Lucy and Luke quickly got into the spirit of the day. They met several Commonwealth and Olympic athletes and sporting stars – Robbie Renwick, Eilidh Doyle (previously Childs), Colin Gregor, Caitlin McLatchie and Julie Fleeting.

They received lots of useful information regarding the role of a Young Ambassador and then were given the opportunity to come up with some ideas to bring back to their school.

In their Ambassador roles, Lucy and Luke will be leading a sub group working with the Active Schools Coordinator, and with volunteers acting as ambassadors for individual sports such as basketball, football, athletics and dance. Anyone who is interested in getting involved should see Lucy, Luke or Miss Simpson in P.E.
