Twenty years after the closure of Ravenscraig Steel Works , The Scottish Steelworkers Memorial Fund began fundraising for a statue that would pay tribute to the people who lost their lives in the Scottish iron and steel making industry.

The statue is named “The Steelman” and it was designed by Andy Scott who is known for also designing The Kelpies in Grangemouth .The Steelman is a 16ft sculpture that weighs two tonnes. The statue represents a worker with a stream of molten steel pouring from his hand.

The statue was unveiled on the 17th of June on the former Ravenscraig site in front of the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility. Former steel workers proudly gathered round the statue while it was being unveiled.
